From protests to proposals

Almost a week on from the Valencia GP, the fans have calmed down, but they have certainly not forgotten what happened and Lorenzo Cloud has even opened a thread on the forum at www.ferrari.com to gather proposals to send to the President of the FIA. Lorenzo’s aim is clear: to let FIA know… “what we think is wrong with modern day F1, with specific reference to the incidents in Valencia and drivers who break the rules being treated too leniently.” And as usual, the fans have not needed to be asked twice, with for example, Team 503 coming up with a detailed examination of things that need putting right, before concluding with an appreciation of the work done by the FIA. He writes: “however, it has to be said that Jean Todt, with the little work he was able to do concerning the 2010 regulations, has already done a good job with the points system, which previously veered towards a further reduction in the value of winning. We wish him all the best for his future endeavours.” Franco Sacchi takes a more sceptical view, writing, “but in your opinion, would they make a clarification knowing that the biggest beneficiary would be Fernando Alonso? How can you think that.” The majority of comments however take a positive approach, as does maranellolover: “they should go back to closing the pit lane as was done before, especially now there is no longer the issue of refuelling. Maybe with the exception of changing tyres if it rains, or if the car is damaged. Indeed, if the pit lane was closed throughout the SC period it would be safer.”

Only RedF1 comes out in favour of penalties: "We need certain penalties and immediate decisions. Why does overtaking the SC in GP2 lead to the black flag and in F1 to a drive through penalty". Some have written to Ferrari directly, rather than going through the Forum, as did Alisa, a fan from Moscow, who in a long mail sends a concerned appeal to the Ferrari President. "Dear Luca! You are a president of the most famous and biggest sportcar company in the world. Ferrari has a very long autosport tradition, 60 years in Formula 1. But there comes a time when maybe it's better to stop being in Formula 1….." writes Alisa who also complains about the fact that testing is restricted and engine development frozen. "The engines are frozen, detuned and equalized. I'm sure Enzo would never allowed that. Engine is the heart of the car, engine is a real brand, not aerodynamics!" Alisa ends with a call to arms: "Ferrari should stand up and fight for the legacy of classic F1, for the legacy fo Enzo! Sorry for being passionate but this is how I feel"

So the fans are passionate and proactive about this sport, as was also seen at yesterday’s FOTA meeting, when fans, not just of Ferrari, discussed the future of Formula 1.

Mark Webber: A Totality Of Loss

What just happened there? What fantasy got waylaid and railroaded off the tracks? Who would've thought that a season that started off with marked progress would midway turn into a nightmare?

Webber's trials and tribulations at the Valencia GP and his near misses on the podiums in the previous few races, raises the question as to "what is going wrong in the scheme of things?" He is in an unique position where nobody expected him to rise to the top of the points, and when he did, it was like a slap in the face of his detractors.

Then came disaster. I guess it must have been waiting at Mark's door and he must have let it in inadvertently. Cause as unprepared as he was to handle the gain in points, we were pained to watch the loss of points, the loss of possible podiums, the loss of championship edge on race day. We banged our heads in frustration. Some of us also tried to rationalize that Red Bull had its favorites in Sebastian Vettel and that it would do all in it's power to anoint him the new WDC if it was all left to Red Bull to do it. To give credibility to that, we saw some mishaps that involved Vettel being the cause for Webber's downfall at least in one instance of gamesmanship.

The thunder from down under seems to still be far off, but we can hope, right!

We can hope that the next few races will see a resurgent Mark Webber going to the top of the field. We can hope for Mark Webber to define this season for us, for after all don't we all love being shocked and surprised out of our wits with something unforeseen happening?!

Force India F1 Team media statement

The Force India F1 Team confirms it has instigated UK civil proceedings against 1Malaysia Racing Team SDN BHD (a Malaysian company), 1Malaysia Racing Team (UK) Limited (Lotus Racing's parent companies), Michael Gascoyne and Aerolab SRL. Force India also confirms that a complaint for disclosure of confidential information was filed in December 2009 with the competent authorities in Italy and that investigations are being conducted.

Force India believes that Lotus Racing, via its use of Aerolab and Fondtech facilities and data, has utilised and benefited from the use of Force India F1 Team's intellectual property, including components and tyres exclusively licensed by Bridgestone to the Force India F1 Team, on its wind tunnel model design for the current Lotus T127 chassis without permission from the Force India F1 Team.

Force India states these are very serious claims and therefore it would not be taking such action if it could not provide supportive evidence.

Additionally Force India would like to clarify that any action between Aerolab and Force India for undue termination of contract is now being addressed by the courts. Force India confirms it paid approximately one million euros in autumn 2009 to secure the payment claimed by Aerolab and it is now for the competent courts to decide whether, indeed, this outstanding amount should be paid to Aerolab given the seriousness of these current allegations.

For reference, the civil court action documentation is in the public domain and can be accessed via the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division.

Interview with Kamui Kobayashi Hinwil

3rd June 2010 – Kamui Kobayashi had a difficult start to what will be his first full  season in Formula One. He suffered from technical problems, and was the innocent  victim in accidents which forced him to retire from five out of the first six races. But in  the seventh Grand Prix he hopes he has seen the light at the end of the tunnel. By  finishing tenth in Istanbul the 23-year-old Japanese scored the team’s first  championship point of the season.

What does scoring this point mean to you?
Kamui Kobayashi: “The team did a really good job that weekend. We had some very  difficult situations in the previous races, so it was really nice to bring both cars home in  Istanbul and get this point. But it is only a single point, and that is not something we  should be satisfied with. It can only be the first step.”

What means more to you: making it into the top ten in Qualifying for the third  time or in the race for the first time?
KK: “Definitely qualifying means more to me because it shows my true performance. In  a race you can always benefit from somebody else’s misfortune or have an issue  yourself. That makes the race result something different. Qualifying is about pure  performance, and I think if we get everything right we always have a chance to get into  the final qualifying session.”
How did you motivate yourself when you retired again and again?
KK: “Sometimes it was not easy to dispel bad memories, like the accident that  happened in Melbourne after I lost the front wing, but motivation has never been a  problem. I love going racing and our targets were always realistic. We wanted to score  points and we’re not dreaming about winning races the next day.”

What do you expect from the next races?
KK: “Canada will be a new track for me. I don’t even know it from the simulator and so  have to learn it in free practice. Obviously other drivers will have an advantage here, but I don’t see it as a problem. In general I feel we are now on the right path. The way  we work together and are attuned to each other has improved, and it was so nice to  see the mechanics in Istanbul smiling for the first time after the race! Until then I had  only seen disappointed faces on Sunday nights. With this positive feeling, that  everybody will now pick up on, and our improvements to the car, I’m sure we will be  doing better in the future.”

McLaren & Hugo Boss on 30th year of partnership

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is pleased to announce a historic extension of its partnership with Hugo Boss. This renewal takes the partnership into its 30th year - which makes it the longest sporting association of its kind on record.

The famous Hugo Boss logo has appeared on the bodywork of all McLaren's Formula 1 cars throughout the past three decades, whilst McLaren drivers and team personnel have worn Hugo Boss clothing throughout that period and continue to do so today.

Martin Whitmarsh (team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) said:

"We're proud and delighted to be able to announce this extension today, not least because it takes our partnership with Hugo Boss into record-breaking territory. Hugo Boss is a fantastic partner, and has been with McLaren throughout our most successful years - sharing in and contributing to the many world championship triumphs we've achieved with legendary drivers such as Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton. Today, Hugo Boss's support of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes's efforts to add to that world championship tally with Lewis and also the reigning world champion, Jenson Button, remains as powerful and as valuable as ever.

"Moreover, I believe Hugo Boss and McLaren continue to enjoy a natural 'fit' from a number of other perspectives - commercial and promotional, obviously, but also in terms of the two companies' shared commitment to striving for and attaining excellence in their respective arenas.

"The clothing that Hugo Boss supplies to all Vodafone McLaren Mercedes personnel - whether it's racetrack apparel, smart casual attire or formal wear - is always slick and functional in equal measure. Sharp presentation has always been a McLaren hallmark, and Hugo Boss has always been central to our efforts to lead the Formula 1 field not only on track but off track as well. Today, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes remains totally committed to presentational slickness, and Hugo Boss continues to set the standard via which we're able consistently to deliver on that commitment."

Claus-Dietrich Lahrs (chief executive officer, Hugo Boss) said:

“Hugo Boss has been associated with McLaren for 29 years already, and it gives me great pleasure to confirm the extension of our partnership into a 30th year and beyond: a milestone in sports sponsorship. As a result of our long-term partnership with McLaren, Hugo Boss has been associated with some of the finest drivers in the history of Formula 1. This year we’re working with, and supporting, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, two of the most internationally recognised sportsmen in the world today. Their appeal reaches not only Formula 1 fans but also a far wider lifestyle audience, too.  As a leading global fashion brand, that extra reach is very important to the growth of our business.”
