14.00-15.00 FORMULA 1 QUALIFYING SESSION
Pedro de la Rosa F112-02 #22 22nd (6 laps) 1:37.883
Narain Karthikeyan F112-01 #23 24th(7 laps) 1:38.314

Another positive day for HRT Formula 1 Team, continuing with its line of progression today at the Bahrain International Circuit and finishing qualifying with its drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan in 22nd and 24th position respectively.
The third practice session in the morning developed with normality and the team tried out different set-up options for the race and qualifying, besides checking that the new upgrades on the cooling system worked correctly. In the qualifying session, the high temperatures and the hard asphalt obliged the team to make the most of the soft tyres which offered only one fastest lap. De la Rosa and Karthikeyan did just that as they improved their best times by almost a second, piling the pressure on Glock’s Marussia in the final stages. The 57-lap race tomorrow presents a new challenge that HRT Formula 1 Team aims to meet.
Pedro de la Rosa: "I’m very happy to be honest. We come from not qualifying in Australia not long ago, so when I saw the times we posted I was glad. For us it’s an important jump and, sincerely, at such a complicated track for us as this one, we didn’t expect to finish ahead of one Marussia, so that’s satisfying. Tyre degradation is high and tomorrow I will have to find the compromise in the first part of the sector in order to have enough rubber for the last one to maintain some grip. We know that the race will be a three-stop or four-stop one and that we’re going to struggle, but so will everyone else so we have to go for it and do the best we can”.
Narain Karthikeyan: "Yesterday was a big struggle for me. We had a tough morning but later improved. Today we made some good progress and in qualifying the car was quite good. In sector 2 I had a misfire on my fastest lap, on turn 12, which cost me a bit of time. The amazing thing is that we haven’t done much to the car but we’re quite close to the group ahead of us and that’s very positive. We found a lot of time from yesterday to today, so we can safely say we’ve shown real progress. Tomorrow is another day and the race will be quite difficult because of the massive tyre degradation but what’s certain is that we’re heading into it fully confident that we can do it”.
Toni Cuquerella, Technical Director: "We’ve continued to progress adequately and, once again, surpassed the cut without any problems. To be more precise, this time we were in the 104.3% and much closer to our rivals. In the practice session we tried out different set-ups and the changes made worked well in qualifying so we can say we’re satisfied. Tomorrow an exciting race awaits us because we expect to see between three and four stops per car since the degradation of the tyres is high. It will also be a challenge for the brakes and the cooling in long distance as conditions will be tough. Management of all these elements will be key”.

Bahrain GP Qualifying-Sauber

Weather: sunny and dry, 27-31°C air, 39-43°C track
After the third free practice on Saturday morning things didn’t look promising at all with both Sauber F1 Team drivers being unhappy with their cars. Further set-up changes paid off and qualifying went better than expected. Sergio Pérez qualified eighth for the Bahrain Grand Prix, Kamui Kobayashi came 12th.
Sergio Pérez:
Sauber C31-Ferrari (Chassis 03/Ferrari 056)
Qualifying: 8th (1:33.394 min in Q3 / new soft tyres)
3rd Practice: 13th (1.35.067 min / new soft tyres / 17 laps)

“Today was a very good qualifying and another great effort by the team. The result is a lot better than we expected after free practice. We really managed to maximise the car’s potential today. The target now is to gain some positions at the start and then we will see how the race develops. It will be pretty tricky for everybody tomorrow in terms of tyre degradation. Another podium doesn’t look realistic at all; this track isn’t an easy one for us anyway. But we will go for points.”
Kamui Kobayashi:
Sauber C31-Ferrari (Chassis 01/Ferrari 056)
Qualifying: 12th  (1:33.806 min in Q2 / new soft tyres)
3rd Practice: 14th (1.35.128 min / new soft tyres / 14 laps)

“With my last set of fresh tyres it went quite well and I could improve at the beginning of my final lap but then I made a mistake at turn eleven. I lost a couple of tenths there. Overall the car was much better in qualifying than it had been in free practice this morning. Basically we have gone back to yesterday’s set-up and that was the right decision. This circuit here should be fairly good for overtaking. Of course straight line speed is essential for that and I hope we can do well tomorrow.”
Giampaolo Dall’Ara, Head of Track Engineering: “The result is in the region we expected it to be before we came here. We were aware that it would be difficult to be as good as in China, but everything went okay today. We struggled a bit with the balance in the morning. This track is definitely not easy for us but then qualifying was fine and both drivers did a good job. Technically there were no problems. For the race the trick will be good tyre management without sacrificing too much pace. We are definitely in a position to fight for points.”

Chinese GP Race Day-Mercedes

Nico Rosberg took a commanding victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai today. Starting from pole position, he took the chequered flag with a 20s margin over the second placed car, achieving his first win in Formula One.
• Nico ran a two-stop option/prime/prime strategy to win by 20.626 seconds over Jenson Button´s McLaren-Mercedes
• Michael was forced to retire on lap 13 after his right front wheel was not properly attached at his first pit stop
• This was Nico´s 111th Formula One start, and comes 111 years after Mercedes´ first win at the 1901 Nice Speed Weeks
• It’s the first win for a works Silver Arrow since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix, on 11 September in Monza - 25,671 days ago!
• The victory is the tenth in Formula One for a works Silver Arrow, and brings the total number of Mercedes-Benz F1 victories to 90
• Mercedes-Benz powered cars filled the podium for the second time in three years at the Chinese Grand Prix
Nico Rosberg “This is a very special moment for me. The whole weekend went perfectly. My first pole position, now my first win in Formula One - it really is fantastic. But it´s not only this; it´s the first win for the new Silver Arrow and for this great team. That is really special for me. Thanks to everybody in the team, here in China and in our factories in Brackley and Brixworth. It makes me very proud that we have improved the car so quickly. I will never forget this race, and the last 20 laps felt as long as if I was racing in the Le Mans 24 Hours! But then crossing the line was so intense. We will enjoy this success, but our feet are still on the ground. We are still not where we want to be, we are still working hard to understand the car and the tyres in all conditions, and we will keep pushing to improve our race pace even further. We will see how that works out in Bahrain.”
Michael Schumacher “First of all, congratulations to the whole team, to Mercedes-Benz and of course to Nico who achieved a perfect victory from start to finish. He did a great job today and yesterday, and I am happy for him. As for my race, my right front tyre got loose following my first pit stop. As I did not want to cause any bigger damage to the car, I stopped on the grass. I felt there was something wrong immediately and especially in turn three, when I put pressure on the right side of the car. Up until then I had a controlled race I´d say, keeping the others behind me and the tyres together. Of course, this was an unfortunate ending to what could have been a nice race, and I feel sorry for the guys, who always work so hard and give their best. But we all know that´s part of the game.”
Ross Brawn “This is a truly special and historic day. I am so delighted for Nico, he has deserved to take his first victory several times, and has now done so by driving a perfectly judged race from pole position. I am excited to see how he develops now he has that win under his belt. Commiserations to Michael, who was driving a controlled race in second position, but was forced to retire after his pit stop. However, he is the first man to say that we win and lose as a team, and his performances this year prove that he is equally capable of climbing to the top step of the podium. Heartfelt congratulations to all our team here at the track, in Brackley and in Brixworth; they have put tremendous effort into this project, and we are now starting to see the rewards for their dedication and expertise. Finally, I must thank all our colleagues at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart and around the world - their support has been unstinting, and we are proud to deliver the first victory for a works Silver Arrow car in 57 years. I was just one year old when Juan Manuel Fangio won in Monza in 1955 - but this victory is something I will remember, and savour, for a very long time indeed!”
Norbert Haug “What a sensational victory from Nico and our team! It was unbelievable how Nico drove and controlled the race from lap one to 56. A big thank you to everybody in Brackley, Brixworth, Stuttgart, Fellbach, Untertürkheim and Möhringen for all their relentless work and their belief in our capabilities and that we can make it. Nico´s performance was superb today, the team executed a great two-stop strategy, and Nico and his car managed the tyres very well. It was a shame for Michael, who dropped out after his first pit stop because of a problem with the right front wheel; he missed out on a possible very good podium result. It was particularly sweet to see Jenson and Lewis on the podium - Mercedes Power to the power of three!”

Team Quotes Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3:
“That was an excellent qualifying session for our team. It's a real bonus for us getting into Q2 but we'd already seen this morning that we were close to a few cars and we thought that with the conditions today, being hot and pretty windy, we might be able to use the option tyres to get us into Q2, and it worked out. We've also saved a set of tyres for tomorrow as we were pretty sure we wouldn't be able to get too much higher, and with the degradation rates we've seen yesterday and today it's clear tyre management is going to play a big role tomorrow. Overall, I'm delighted for the team. We've worked really hard to put ourselves in a position where we can fight and today we showed that we are close enough to record results like we did today. We made progress over the winter, and even though we haven't really shown it yet this season, today's the sort of result we knew we could put in, so it's a great day, for everyone in Caterham F1 Team back at the factory and here on track.”
Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2:
“I'm reasonably pleased with how today went, bearing in mind the problem we had with the floor in FP3 which cost us a bit of time and meant we weren't really able to find a balance on the soft tyres that I could really exploit in qualifying. My run on the prime tyres was good - I was very close to my team mate and the car felt good, but when we switched to the options the car just didn't feel right. It wasn't so much a balance issue, it was more about how the car felt under braking and I think that's what cost me the time on the soft tyres. Despite that I think we look like we're getting towards where we should be. We're much closer to the cars ahead than we were in China and having already seen how we can fight with some of the midfield cars in the races I think tomorrow could be a good day for us. It's definitely going to be interesting. There will be a lot of stops and it'll come down to who uses their tyres best.”
Thierry Salvi, Renault Sport F1 Support Leader:
"Seeing Heikki in Q2 is a very good result for us and the whole team. We have been working on giving the drivers the right balance between top speed and traction out of the slower corners and today's result shows we have found the right setup for this track. The wind today, particularly on the main straight where there was a stronger head wind than yesterday, meant we had to fine tune the engine maps and our final positions in today's qualifying session is the reward for the work the whole team has done."
Mark Smith, Technical Director: “We are all delighted with today's result. This morning we had a very good FP3 and the work we have done overnight has paid off with Heikki's result today. Everything on his car worked as we had planned and this is a clear sign that the whole team is making progress. Vitaly had a strong run on the first set of medium tyres but he just was not able to get the most out of the soft tyres on his second run, but he has already shown how strong he is on Sundays so we have good reason to be positive about his prospects here as well. We know we have a good package for the race tomorrow, so we'll look forward to what will definitely be an exciting Grand Prix and aim to maintain the sort of pace we have already shown in the first three races this season.”

Chinese GP Race Day-Toro Rosso

Jean-Eric Vergne (STR7-03)
Race finish: 16th

“We decided to change some elements on the car that had not worked well up to qualifying, which is why I started from pit lane, so my set-up for the race was more similar to what we had in Melbourne and Sepang. I did not have high hopes of doing much, starting from the back, but the important thing was to see how the car performed. It was pretty good, so I expect we will start with it like that in Bahrain and hopefully be able to have a better race result. Today’s race had some enjoyable moments as I passed a few cars, but it was a bitshort for me, as a few more laps and I think I could have got ahead of the two guys in front of me.
Daniel Ricciardo (STR7-01)
Race finish: 17th

“My start off the line was okay, but I got a bit squeezed around the outside at Turn 1 and lost what I had gained earlier. Then, on the same lap, I went round some debris on the track at Turn 6 and lost another place. In fact, my whole first stint was not very good and we were struggling to overtake. In the second stint, it went slightly better and the last one better still, but the pace today was not good enough to deliver anything better.”
Franz Tost: “As Jean-Eric did not have a particularly good qualifying, we decided to make changes to his car set-up and configuration under Parc Ferme rules, which of course involved having to start from the pit lane. Today, tyres were the key factor for everyone and we saw that aspect produce some dramatic racing. In our case, we opted to put our two drivers on different strategies, Daniel using three sets and Jean-Eric four. However, we have been
lacking pace since the start of the weekend and therefore did not make much progress up the order, with the two cars finishing 16th and 17th. Having run the two cars in different configurations to one another today, we will now analyse carefully the cable data to work onproducing the best possible set-up for next weekend’s race in Bahrain, where I believe we will be capable of getting a better result.”
